Aoi Swimming represented the strange angular pizzazz of Generation Zero when she built a music scene in Sapporo with her collaborative efforts in the duo Kakuni (lit. "cubed meat stew") alongside Yumi Ozaki. Her work in the noise-rock band Hangaku (lit. "half-priced") later garnered attention beyond the confines of Japan with edgy synth-laden punk anthems. Seemingly similar but never quite connected to the works of Aoi Swimming, Minoru Tanaka has become a household name amongst Japanese underground pop fans for his peculiar "karaoke style" ditties as found in Namida-kun no iru tokoro (2004, Sweet Dreams Press). The surprising yet inevitable collaborative album of the two musicians—recorded with the help of ASUNA and Yukinari Azukizawa (ten tote)—now presents a dizzying genre-crossing assortment of hip-hop, city pop, electro-pop, dub, indie pop, and a host of other styles. Bring out your mirror balls and dancing shoes – you won't be disappointed.
